Special NeedsSensory-Friendly Events for Kids with Special Needs

We welcome all children who meet program guidelines to our events. However, we understand that some kids have special needs that make attending certain programs challenging.

Listed below are sensory-friendly movie screenings and encounters with outside performers. Also listed are programs that, while not designed specifically for kids with special needs, may have particular appeal.

Sensory-Friendly Events

  • Book Buddies
    When: Thursday, June 30, 2016 - 7:00 PM - 7:45 PM
    Where: Youth Program Room

    Older children pair up with younger ones to share books, crafts, and fun. Older buddies should be entering grades 6 and up; younger buddies should be ages 4 to 7. Registration begins each Monday morning and continues until that week’s program is full.

  • Stories in Maple Park
    When: Monday, July 11, 2016 - 10:30 AM - 11:00 AM
    Where: Maple Park

    Families are invited for stories and songs with Wilmette librarians in local parks. Please gather near the tennis courts at each park. In case of rain or extreme heat, storytimes will take place at the Library. If in doubt, please call 847-256-6945. Cosponsored by the Wilmette Public Library and the Wilmette Park District.
  • Flying Fox Conservation Fund (Sensory-Friendly)
    When: Wednesday, July 13, 2016 - 4:30 PM - 4:45 PM
    Where: Auditorium

    Get an up-close look at ten animals from around the world, and then stay after to pet the animals. Registration is required for this sensory-friendly performance. Registration starts June 29 for Wilmette & Kenilworth residents, July 6 for nonresidents.
  • Summer StoryWalk
    When: Thursday, July 14, 2016 - 3:30 PM - 3:50 PM
    Where: Vattmann Park

    Enjoy the outdoors, read the new summer story with your librarians, and finish up with a treat. Rain date: Thursday, July 21. Can't make it today? Don't worry! Our StoryWalk will stay up throughout the summer. In partnership with the Friends of the Wilmette Public Library and the Wilmette Park District.

    Meet us at the Wilmette Summerfest in Downtown Wilmette, and step into the world of the Little Red Hen. The StoryBus is a project of the Dolores Kohl Education Foundation.
  • Ben's Bubble Show (Sensory-Friendly)
    When: Wednesday, July 27, 2016 - 4:30 PM - 4:45 PM
    Where: Auditorium

    Enjoy bubble sculptures, illusions, and audience participation! Registration is required for this sensory-friendly performance. Registration starts July 13 for Wilmette & Kenilworth residents, July 20 for nonresidents.
