STEMScience, Technology, Engineering & Math

While the Wilmette Public Library loves literature and language, we also recognize the importance of technological literacy. We offer many programs for children that build scientific knowledge and problem-solving skills, from simple chemistry experiments and animal visits to computer programming and Lego robotics.

  • Wobblebots
    When: Friday, June 16, 2017 - 4:00 PM - 4:45 PM
    Where: Youth Program Room

    Make your own robot that can wiggle, dance, and jump! Grades 2-5 with an adult. Registration starts June 2 for Wilmette & Kenilworth residents, June 9 for nonresidents.
  • Dave DiNaso's Traveling World of Reptiles
    When: Wednesday, June 21, 2017 - 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM
    Where: Auditorium

    Join us for this up-close, live, hands-on experience about reptiles and amphibians from around the world. Free ticket required. Tickets are available in the Youth Services Department starting at 6:00 the evening before the program on a first-come, first-served basis. Limit 6 tickets per family.
  • Dave DiNaso's Traveling World of Reptiles (Sensory-Friendly)
    When: Wednesday, June 21, 2017 - 4:45 PM - 5:15 PM

    Kids with special needs and their families are invited to this sensory-friendly, up-close, live, hands-on experience about reptiles and amphibians from around the world. Registration starts June 7 for Wilmette & Kenilworth residents, June 14 for nonresidents.

  • Scratch Jr.

    Take the very first steps towards learning computer programming by trying out this iPad app, a version of the digital media design program Scratch designed for younger kids. We'll make games and animations. Participants must be able to read. Grades 2-4. Registration starts June 8 for Wilmette & Kenilworth residents, June 15 for nonresidents.
  • WeDo
    When: Thursday, July 06, 2017 - 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM
    Where: Youth Program Room

    Experiment with Lego robotics! Program and build your own cool contraptions. Grades 3-5. Registration starts June 22 for Wilmette & Kenilworth residents, June 29 for nonresidents.
  • Tech Playground (Gr. 1-4)
    When: Monday, July 24, 2017 - 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
    Where: Youth Program Room

    Kids, show your parents what you can do! You'll both have the opportunity to play with the library's tech toys such as Lego WeDo, Scratch Jr., robots, and more. Grades 1-4 with an adult. Registration starts July 10 for Wilmette & Kenilworth residents, July 17 for nonresidents.
  • Tech Playground (Gr. 5-9)
    When: Tuesday, August 01, 2017 - 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
    Where: Youth Program Room

    Experiment with the library's tech tools such as Scratch, stop-motion animation, robots, and more. Parents are welcome to attend and tinker along. Grades 5-9. Registration starts July 18 for Wilmette & Kenilworth residents, July 25 for nonresidents.
  • Scratch with Digital Adventures
    When: Thursday, August 17, 2017 - 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
    Where: Youth Program Room

    Design a game similar to dodgeball using this digital media design program. Staff from Wilmette's Digital Adventures, which offers coding classes and technology camps for kids, will lead the class. Grades 5-8. Registration starts August 3 for Wilmette & Kenilworth residents, August 10 for nonresidents.
