Beautiful Ruins

As part of its 2013 One Book, Everybody Reads program, the Wilmette Public Library presents a series of events related to Beautiful Ruins.  

Unless otherwise noted, all programs are free and open to the public  and will be held in the Wilmette Public Library Auditorium, 1242 Wilmette Avenue.


April 2 at 7:00 pm: Hollywood RuinsFilm historian Michael Smith discusses the novel Beautiful Ruins and its backdrop, the 1963 movie Cleopatra and its role in ending Hollywood's old studio system.

April 4 at 1:00 pm; repeated at 7:00 pm: Armchair Travels Visits Cinque Terre. Travel experts from Select Italy present a “you are there” visit to the Cinque Terre, along northern Italy’s Riviera.

April 9 at 10:00 am: Barbara Rinella Presents Cleopatra. The popular local book dramatist brings Cleopatra to life.  Tickets at no charge are required. Wilmette and Kenilworth residents may pick up two tickets at the Recent Arrivals Desk beginning April 1.

April 12 at 6:30 pm: Friday Night at the Movies. A screening of Robert Altman’s The Player, in which a Hollywood studio executive is blackmailed by a writer whose script he rejected. Features cameo appearances by more than 65 stars. Rated R.

April 15 at 7:00 pm: Small Tastes of Italy. Chef Molly McGrath and owner Rob Garrison of The Noodle Café in Wilmette present the flavors of Italy with tastings and recipes. Seating is limited. Register using the Library’s online calendar or call 847-256-6930 beginning March 27.

April 16 at 10:30 am: Classics and Contemporary Book Discussion Group. Staff librarian leads a discussion of Beautiful Ruins.

April 26 at 6:30 pm: Friday Night at the Movies. A screening of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? with Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.  Winner of five Academy Awards.  Rated R.

April 29 at 7:00 pm: Monday Evening Discussion Group . Staff librarian leads a discussion of Beautiful Ruins.

May 5 at 2:00 pm: Author Jess Walter Visits Wilmette to Discuss Beautiful RuinsA book signing will be held following the program, and The Book Stall at Chestnut Court will have books available for purchase Please note this program will be held at the Wilmette Community Recreational Center Auditorium, 3000 Glenview Road, Wilmette.
